Everyday women's health, seen in private
From a pap smear to family planning or a check-up in pregnancy, you are seen in a private room, and the doctor explains what is happening and what comes next. If you would rather see a woman, ask for Dr. Valerianne.
What happens at a pap smear
A pap smear checks the cells of your cervix (the neck of the womb) for early changes that could turn into cervical cancer. Changes found early can be treated before cancer starts.
You lie on a couch in a private room. The doctor gently opens the vagina with a small instrument called a speculum and takes a sample from the cervix with a small, soft brush. It takes a few minutes. The sample goes to a lab, and the doctor goes through the result with you.
- For women aged 20 to 65 who have ever had sex
- After two normal yearly results, once every 3 years
- Best done when you are not on your period
- No sex, vaginal creams or douching for 2 days before
- Ask for a female doctor if you prefer
